Wamunyu Craft Centre

Wamunyu Craft Centre 1

The Wamunyu Craft Centre in Machakos is the pioneer in the modern wood carving industry in Kenya with roots tracing way back to Mutisya Munge who is said to have begun to carve figures following his service in the British army in Tanzania during the first World War.

He borrowed the art of wood carving from the Makonde people whose homeland straddles Mozambique -Tanzania border. Mutisya brought the knowledge of carving to his native home village Wamunyu in Masaku (presently Machakos) about 100Km South of Nairobi.
