Wagalla Monument’ commemorates the four day February 1984 massacre that occurred in Wajir airport and one of the gut-wrenching episodes in the history of Kenya. It began as an effort to disarm the ethnic Degodia Clan, to remedy the clan-related conflict that was spiralling out of hand. Thousands of people were delivered to the Wajir airstrip – kept hungry, ordered to strip naked and, lie on the ground for days. On 10 February 1984 hell broke loose when the government forces opened fire at Wajir Airport. The Government claimed only 54 people died. Natives claim as many as 5000 lost their lives.
