The Koitalel is one of Nandi County’s most important cultural landmarks. Situated in Nandi Hills town, the Museum is also a memorial site & a mausoleum. The mausoleum houses the remains (except the skull) of Koitalel who was the spiritual leader (orkoiyot) of the Nandi when their land was being invaded by the British. How he was assassinated in 1905 and the treatment of his brothers is grim but fascinating history. More uplifting is the story of how the British officer responsible later came to regret his actions, asked for forgiveness and instructed his son to return the orkoiyot’s ceremonial sticks ––which were stolen at the time to Kenya.
