Tuthu Catholic Church

The quiet Tuthu village in Murang’a County is an important cultural heritage site for the Agikuyu as it is home to Tuthu Shrine. The shrine whose history dates back to 1902 was the site of the premier Catholic Mission in the Kikuyu land. The inaugural service was held deservedly, under the Mugumo tree - a tree considered as holy by Kikuyu ancient traditions. Its first Church - built as a goodwill gesture for "Chief Karuri Gakuru" who at the time was guiding the side of missionaries through Central Kenya en route Ethiopia- was dismantled during the Mau Mau insurgency. Its present-day Church was constructed in 1916
