Uhuru Gardens was established at the exact spot where freedom (Uhuru) from colonial rule was declared at midnight on 12 December 1963. The monument is a 24-m-high triumphal column, supporting a pair of clasped hands and the dove of peace, high over a statue of a group of freedom fighters raising the flag. Across the car park are a less interesting granite and black marble structure with a fountain put up in 1988 to mark 25 years of Independence.
