Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park
Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve in Kwale County in Kenya's first Blue Park. The Marine Park is now part of a growing network of 21 Blue Parks around the world, as recognized by the Marine Conservation Institute. Kisite-Mpunguti was awarded a gold level Blue Park Award for meeting the most stringent science-based standards for marine life protection and management.
The Marine Park is located on the south coast of Kenya near the Tanzanian border, off the coast of Shimoni and south of Wasini Island in Kwale County. The facility encompasses a marine area that includes four small islands surrounded by coral reef. Kisite Island is a small waterless coral island located 8 kilometers off the coast of the Marine Park. At low tide, coral platforms around the raised central portion are exposed. The three other coral islets in the park (Mpunguti ya Juu, Mpunguti ya Chini, and Liwe la Jahazi) are scrub-covered and do not support any significant wildlife or birds. Kisite-Mpunguti received a gold level Blue Park Award for meeting the highest science-based standards for marine life protection and management.
