Officially opened to the public in 2011, and managed by Kenya Forest Service, Karura is a vast urban forest in Nairobi best for hiking and picnics. The harmonious sounds of the chirping of the birds and the sound of flowing water is simply therapeutic. Bordering the suburbs of Runda, Gigiri, and Muthaiga about 5 km north of the city center, Karura is also home to the is home to Syke’s and vervet monkey, which are fairly easily seen, and other far more secretive forest species such as bushbuck, duiker, bush pig, genet and civet. The main entrance to Karura Forest is on the Limuru Road just after the Belgian Embassy.
