Jamia Mosque Nairobi

  • The largest Mosque in Kenya

Jamia Mosque is located between Kigali Road & Banda Street in Nairobi CBD. It is the largest & most important Mosque in Kenya.

The Mosque was founded in 1902 by Syed Maulana Abdullah Shah but construction did not begin until 1925 due to a decree that forbade Indians and Arabs from owning land in Nairobi at the time. As such, worship took place in a temporary iron sheets house in the interim period.

When Nairobi became the established capital of the colony, the congregation outgrew the original structure. Work began in 1925 as a collective effort from the Muslim community at the time and it was completed by 1933. The mosque was built adjacent to Biashara Street (which used to be Bazaar Street) reflecting the strong link between Islam and trading.

Today, Jamia mosque is still the most significant Islamic center in Nairobi with a capacity of over 8,000 worshippers. There is a library, training center, a men’s prayer hall on the ground floor, and a women’s prayer hall on the first floor. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome to visit the mosque and the only requirement is that you take off your shoes and for the ladies cover your head.
