Located in the northern part of the former Eastern Province, 285 kilometers north of Nairobi. If you are driving, the town is accessible from Nairobi city using Thika road through Nanyuki to Isiolo. The road is in good condition and the journey from Nairobi to Isiolo takes roughly 3.5hrs to 4hrs. If you prefer public transport, there are matatus from Nairobi to Nanyuki and from there onwards to Isiolo. Matatus to Nanyuki can be boarded at Nairobi’s River Road stage. There are buses & minivans from Nanyuki which takes about 1½ hours to Isiolo and Meru which is 2 hours to Isiolo.
With the Isiolo airport having been renovated, accessing Isiolo by air has never been easier. In Fact, there are scheduled flights to different game reserves like the Lewa and Buffalo Springs. Isiolo Airport has a 5,000 square meters passenger terminal and could handle up to 125,000 passengers annually.
How to get Around Isiolo
If you take matatu or driving yourself, it is always advisable to have some company as the region has had some insecurity incidents in the past. The road network all the way to Busia is in good condition.
